Which format should I use on a website?
WebP for almost everything: it is widely supported and much smaller than PNG or JPEG. AVIF is smaller still but slower to encode and slightly less supported.
What happens to a transparent background when I convert to JPG?
JPEG cannot store transparency, so it is filled with a solid colour. This tool lets you choose which one instead of defaulting to black.
