Why use this tool?

  • A video's own thumbnail is the obvious starting point for a blog post, a newsletter item or a slide that talks about it.
  • YouTube keeps the picture at five different sizes, and the biggest is not always available. Seeing them side by side saves you guessing at image addresses.
  • Besides the chosen cover, YouTube pulls three still frames from inside the video, which are handy when the official thumbnail is cluttered with text.
  • You can copy an image address to use in a CMS or a document without saving anything to disk first.

How to use Thumbnail Downloader

  1. Paste a YouTube link, or just the 11-character video ID, into "Paste a link or video ID". Watch links, youtu.be links, Shorts, embed and live URLs all work.
  2. Check that "Video ID" appears in green. If you see a red notice instead, the text was not recognised as a YouTube address.
  3. Look through the thumbnails listed on the right. Each is labelled with its name and pixel size, such as "Max resolution · 1280 × 720".
  4. Click "Download JPG" under the size you want. If your browser blocks the direct save, the image opens in a new tab and you can right-click to save it.
  5. Use "Copy URL" beside any size, or "Copy all URLs" to take every available address at once.

Features

  • Accepts watch links, youtu.be short links, Shorts, embed, live and nocookie URLs, or a bare video ID
  • Five standard sizes: max resolution (1280 × 720), standard (640 × 480), high (480 × 360), medium (320 × 180) and small (120 × 90)
  • Three extra frames pulled from the video itself, each 480 × 360
  • Sizes the video does not have are hidden automatically instead of showing a broken image
  • Copy buttons for the video ID, a single image address, or all addresses together
  • A ready-made img tag for the max-resolution picture, with width, height and lazy loading
  • An "Open the video" link to check you picked the right one

Supported formats

Takes a YouTube address or video ID as input. Every thumbnail is a JPG, downloaded under a name made from the video ID and the size, such as dQw4w9WgXcQ-maxresdefault.jpg.

Tips

  • Max resolution is often missing on older or low-resolution uploads. If it is not listed, the 640 × 480 standard size is the next best option.
  • The 480 × 360 sizes have black bars baked into some videos. Check the preview before you download rather than after.
  • The numbered frames are taken from the video at points YouTube chooses, so they change nothing about the creator's official thumbnail.
  • A thumbnail belongs to whoever uploaded the video. Download only images you have the right to use, or that the creator has said you may reuse.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with YouTube Shorts links?

Yes. A youtube.com/shorts/ address is read the same way as a normal watch link, and so are embed, live and youtu.be addresses.

Why is the max resolution size missing for my video?

YouTube only generates a 1280 × 720 thumbnail for some videos, usually newer or higher-resolution ones. When it is not there, the tool hides that entry rather than showing a broken picture.

Are my links sent to HubToolify?

No. Your browser requests the images straight from YouTube's image server and HubToolify does not receive or store the link you paste.

What does the embed code do?

It is an img tag that points at the max-resolution thumbnail, with width 1280, height 720 and lazy loading. It shows the picture on a page; it does not embed the video player.

Can I download a thumbnail as PNG?

No. YouTube serves its thumbnails as JPG and this tool saves them unchanged. If you need another format, run the file through an image converter afterwards.

The download opened a new tab instead of saving. Why?

Some browsers block saving a picture from another website directly. The tool then opens the image in a new tab so you can right-click and choose Save image.

Can I try this Pro tool without an account?

Yes. Look up any YouTube video and see and copy every thumbnail size free. Saving JPG files requires Pro. Your own input is processed locally in your browser.

Will upgrading keep my work?

Checkout and login open in a separate tab. Keep the workspace open to retain inputs, settings and previews. Files stay in that tab only; keep the originals in case you close or reload it. Export access is checked with the server after payment.

Your browser queries a public third-party service directly for this lookup. Nothing you enter is sent to or stored by HubToolify.
