Why use this tool?
- Hearing a draft read aloud is one of the quickest ways to catch clumsy sentences and missing words.
- Long articles and documents are easier to take in by ear when you cannot sit looking at a screen.
- Checking how a name, a number or a product word is pronounced is easier with a real voice than by guessing.
- Slowing the rate down helps when you are learning a language and want to hear each word clearly.
How to use Text to Speech
- Type or paste your text into "What should be read aloud". The word count, segment count and approximate length update as you go.
- Choose a voice from the "Voice" menu. The list shows each voice's language, and marks ones that are not stored on your device as "online".
- Set "Rate", "Pitch" and "Volume" with the sliders.
- Press "Speak". Use "Pause" and "Resume" to stop and continue, "Back" and "Skip" to jump a sentence, and "Stop" to finish.
- Watch "Follow along" under the voice settings. The word being spoken is highlighted as it is read, in browsers that report word positions.
Features
- Works with whatever voices your browser and operating system provide
- Rate from 0.5x to 2x, pitch from 0 to 2 and volume from 0 to 1
- Pause, resume, back, skip and stop controls
- Long text is cut into segments of up to 180 characters at sentence ends, so it keeps going instead of stopping part way
- Word count, segment count and an estimate of how long it will take at the chosen rate
- Highlighted word-by-word follow-along text
- Changing the voice while speaking restarts from the beginning with the new voice
Supported formats
Plain text in, spoken audio out through your speakers. No audio file is produced, so there is nothing to download.
Tips
- Punctuation controls the pauses. Add a full stop or comma where you want a breath, and use line breaks between paragraphs.
- If the voice list is empty, interact with the page once and wait a moment. Some browsers only load their voices after the first interaction.
- Voices differ a lot by device. Try several, since the ones built into Windows, macOS, Android and iOS do not sound alike.
- The time shown is an estimate based on roughly 160 words a minute at normal rate, so treat it as a guide only.
Frequently asked questions
Can I save the speech as an MP3 or WAV file?
No. The browser's speech feature plays sound but gives web pages no access to the audio, so the tool cannot record it or offer a download.
Is there a limit on how much text I can read?
There is no limit set by the tool. It speaks long text as a queue of short segments so the browser does not cut it off, but a very long passage will simply take a long time.
Which languages and voices are available?
Whatever your device and browser provide. The tool does not add voices of its own, so the number of languages depends on your system.
What does an "online" voice mean?
It is a voice that your browser fetches from a remote service rather than running on your device. HubToolify does not receive your text either way, but the browser's vendor may process it for those voices, so use an on-device voice for sensitive text.
Why does nothing happen when I press Speak?
Your browser may not support the Web Speech API, in which case the tool says so. In a supported browser, check that the device volume is up and that a voice is selected.
Why did the highlight not move?
Word highlighting depends on the browser reporting where each word starts. Some voices do not, and the speech still plays normally.
Can I try this Pro tool without an account?
Yes. Hear up to 1,000 characters read aloud free with every voice and setting. Pro reads longer passages. Your own input is processed locally in your browser.
Will upgrading keep my work?
Checkout and login open in a separate tab. Keep the workspace open to retain inputs, settings and previews. Files stay in that tab only; keep the originals in case you close or reload it. Export access is checked with the server after payment.
HubToolify never receives your text; the speech is made by your browser. Voices marked "online" in the Voice menu are run by the browser vendor, so for those the text may be processed by them — pick a voice without the mark to keep it entirely on your device.
