Why use this tool?

  • A sitemap helps search engines find pages that nothing else links to, and tells them when pages last changed.
  • A single sitemap file may hold at most 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed, so large sites need several files and an index.
  • Multi-language sites need hreflang alternates written reciprocally, which is tedious and error-prone by hand.
  • You may already have a sitemap that needs editing, or just a plain list of addresses from a spreadsheet.

How to use Sitemap Generator

  1. On the URLs tab, enter your Site address, then put one URL per line in the list. Relative paths such as /about are resolved against the site address.
  2. To set per-line values, add them after a pipe: a date is read as lastmod, a word like weekly as changefreq and a number from 0 to 1 as priority.
  3. Add Exclude patterns, one per line, such as */tag/* or *?*, to drop matching URLs.
  4. Open Defaults to set a last-modified date, change frequency or priority for all URLs; open Languages to add language codes and URL prefixes for hreflang.
  5. Check the findings and the XML preview on the right.
  6. Click Download, or Download zip when there are several files, and add the Sitemap: line shown under Tell crawlers where it is to your robots.txt.

Features

  • Absolute and relative URLs, resolved against your site address
  • Duplicate removal and glob-style exclusions
  • lastmod, changefreq and priority, per line or as defaults, with priority optionally set by path depth
  • hreflang alternates, including x-default
  • Automatic splitting into numbered files plus sitemap-index.xml when the limits are passed
  • Import of an existing sitemap.xml or a .txt list of URLs
  • Findings that flag problems with the set
  • A plain-text sitemap download, and a robots.txt line to copy

Supported formats

Accepts pasted URLs, or an uploaded .xml sitemap or .txt list. Outputs sitemap.xml (or sitemap-1.xml, sitemap-2.xml and so on with sitemap-index.xml), a sitemap.txt list, and a zip that also holds a robots-snippet.txt.

Tips

  • If you aim to rank on Google, concentrate on lastmod and keep it truthful; the tool notes that Google ignores priority and mostly ignores changefreq.
  • Only submit URLs you want indexed. Use exclusions to leave out tag, search and paginated pages.
  • When the set is split into several files, submit sitemap-index.xml, not the individual files.
  • Imported files keep their own dates and values unless you tick Overwrite dates already on a line.

Frequently asked questions

Does it crawl my website to find the pages?

No. A browser is not allowed to read pages on other sites, so you supply the URL list, for example from your CMS or analytics, or import an existing sitemap.

Are my URLs uploaded?

No. The list is processed and the XML is built entirely in your browser.

How many URLs can one sitemap hold?

The protocol allows 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed per file. Beyond that, the tool splits the list into several files and writes a sitemap index.

How do I add hreflang alternates?

Go to the Languages tab, enter each language code with the prefix its URLs start with, and every URL under a prefix gets alternates pointing to all the others, itself included.

What is excluded by the Exclude box?

Any URL matching one of the patterns, using * for any run of characters and $ to anchor the end, the same way robots.txt matches paths.

Where do I put the finished file?

Upload it to your site's root, then submit it in Google Search Console and add the Sitemap: line the tool shows to your robots.txt.

Can I try this Pro tool without an account?

Yes. Preview and copy XML for up to 10 URLs free. Pro supports larger lists, hreflang and file exports. Your own input is processed locally in your browser.

Will upgrading keep my work?

Checkout and login open in a separate tab. Keep the workspace open to retain inputs, settings and previews. Files stay in that tab only; keep the originals in case you close or reload it. Export access is checked with the server after payment.

Your files are processed directly in your browser and are not uploaded to HubToolify's servers.
