Background Blur Pro
Keep the subject of a photo sharp and let everything behind it fall out of focus, the way a portrait-mode lens does. The subject can be found automatically, or you can mark a sharp area yourself. Free preview · Pro required to export. Edit your photo with a preview up to 640 pixels. Pro exports at the tool’s full working resolution.

Why use this tool?
- A snapshot taken on a phone or a small camera often has a busy background that competes with the person or product in front of it.
- Blurring the background after the fact saves a reshoot when the shot was good but the setting behind it was cluttered.
- Darkening and a vignette on top of the blur pull the eye toward the subject, which helps for profile pictures and product shots.
- A manual area, including a horizontal band, gives a tilt-shift look to a landscape or street scene where there is no single subject to detect.
How to use Background Blur
- Drop an image onto the tool, or click the drop zone to browse. Files up to 30 MB are accepted.
- Under Keep sharp, choose Detected subject to let the AI find the subject, or Manual area to place the sharp region yourself.
- Set Blur strength, then add Darken background or Vignette if you want more separation. Feather edge softens the line between sharp and blurred.
- In Detected subject mode, move Edge tightness until the outline sits right on the subject. In Manual area mode, pick Ellipse, Rectangle or Band (tilt-shift), click the preview to place it and size it with Width, Height and Area softness.
- Hold the Hold to compare button to see the original, choose JPEG, WebP or PNG under Export, then press Download.
Features
- Automatic subject detection for people, products, animals, cars and objects
- Manual sharp area as an ellipse, rectangle or horizontal tilt-shift band, placed by clicking the preview

- Two detection models: a full one, and a lighter one used automatically on phones and tablets
- Hold-to-compare against the original
- Export as JPEG, WebP or PNG with an output quality slider
Supported formats
Accepts any image your browser can open, up to 30 MB. Exports JPEG, WebP or PNG; the filename ends in -blurred.
Tips
- Photos larger than 2400 px on the long side are worked on at 2400 px, so the exported file can be smaller than the original. The tool shows the working size when this happens.
- The first detection downloads the AI model, which is large for the full version (about 98 MB). It is cached, so later photos are quick; the lighter model is about 5 MB.
- If the detector cuts into hair or misses a thin edge, raise or lower Edge tightness before switching to the manual area.
- Keep Blur strength moderate. Very large values on a small subject start to look like a cut-out pasted on a smudge.
Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded to find the subject?
No. The detection model is downloaded into your browser and runs there, so the photo itself is not sent to a server.
Why does the first run take longer?
The first time you use Detected subject the model has to be downloaded, and a progress percentage is shown. After that it is cached in your browser and reruns are instant.
What if the automatic detection gets the subject wrong?
Switch to Manual area and place an ellipse or rectangle over what should stay sharp. If the detector errors out, the tool suggests the manual area as the fallback.
Can I create a tilt-shift effect?
Yes. In Manual area mode choose Band (tilt-shift), click the preview to set where the sharp strip sits, and adjust its height and softness.
Which format should I export?
JPEG or WebP for sharing, since the file is much smaller. PNG is lossless and the largest, so it only makes sense if you plan to edit the result further.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. On phones and tablets the tool uses the compact detection model, which is much smaller to download.
Can I try this Pro tool without an account?
Yes. Edit your photo with a preview up to 640 pixels. Pro exports at the tool’s full working resolution. Your own input is processed locally in your browser.
Will upgrading keep my work?
Checkout and login open in a separate tab. Keep the workspace open to retain inputs, settings and previews. Files stay in that tab only; keep the originals in case you close or reload it. Export access is checked with the server after payment.
Your files are processed directly in your browser and are not uploaded to HubToolify's servers.
