URL Shortener Pro

Shorten a link, then keep control of it. Every link here can be pointed somewhere else, given an expiry date or switched off entirely after it has been printed, mailed or posted.

Why use this tool?

  • A long campaign URL with five tracking parameters is unreadable in a bio, a slide or a printed card, and gets truncated by half the places you paste it.
  • The address you shorten today is not always the one you want tomorrow. A short link is a layer of indirection you can edit; a raw URL on a printed page is not.
  • A link handed out for one event should be able to stop working when the event does, rather than pointing at a 404 forever.
  • Click counts tell you whether the QR code on the poster was ever scanned — which is the only way to find out whether the poster worked.

How to use URL Shortener

  1. Paste the long URL. A missing https:// is added for you.
  2. Optionally set a custom ending, so the link reads as something rather than as seven random characters.
  3. Optionally set an expiry in days, after which the link stops resolving.
  4. Copy the short link, or download the QR code generated from it.
  5. Come back any time to repoint it, rename it, switch it off or check how many times it has been followed.

Features

  • Custom link endings, or short generated codes with no confusable characters
  • Repoint any link to a new destination after it has been shared
  • Optional expiry dates, and an off switch that takes effect on the next click
  • A click count and last-clicked date for every link
  • A QR code for each short link, generated in your browser

Tips

  • Use a custom ending for anything a person has to type or read aloud. Generated codes are for links that are only ever clicked.
  • Point a QR code at a short link rather than at the destination, and you can fix the destination after the poster is printed — but the code then depends on this service existing. For something that must work forever with no dependency, encode the destination directly with the QR Generator instead.
  • Shorten the tagged URL from the UTM Builder, not the plain one. The analytics parameters travel with the redirect and still arrive.

Frequently asked questions

Do the short links expire?

Only if you set an expiry. By default a link keeps working until you switch it off or delete it.

Can I change where a link points after sharing it?

Yes — that is the main reason to use one. The redirect is served fresh on every click and is never cached, so a change takes effect the next time somebody follows it, including for people who have clicked before.

Does shortening a link hurt SEO?

For links you share it makes no difference; the redirect passes the visitor straight through and the short URL itself is marked noindex so it cannot compete with the destination in search results. For links inside your own site's content, link to the real URL rather than through a redirect.

Are the tracking parameters kept?

Yes. The destination is stored exactly as you entered it, so UTM parameters and everything else after the question mark arrive intact.

Why do I need an account for this one when most tools do not?

Because a short link lives on our domain and keeps working long after it is made. Tying every link to an account is what lets an abused one be traced and removed, which is what stops the domain being blocked for everybody else.

Unlike the rest of these tools, this one keeps what you give it — a short link only works because the destination is stored here and served on every click. The link is tied to your account, only you can see or change it, and deleting it stops the redirect immediately.
