Why use this tool?
- Developers need test data, seed rows and placeholder ids, often hundreds at a time.
- Picking a version matters: random v4 ids scatter across a database index, while time-ordered v7 ids sort by creation moment.
- Two systems sometimes need to derive the same identifier for the same thing without talking to each other, which is what v5 does.
- An id copied from a log or a table is easier to debug when you can tell its version and, for v1 and v7, when it was made.
How to use UUID Generator
- Choose a Version: v4 random, v7 time-ordered, v5 from a name, or Nil & max.
- For v4 and v7, drag the How many slider (1 to 500). For v5, pick a Namespace and type one or more names, one per line.
- Choose a Format: lower case, upper case, braces, compact without hyphens, or a urn:uuid: prefix.
- Click Generate (or Derive for v5). The list appears on the right.
- Use Copy, Copy all or Download to take them as uuids.txt, or click a row to copy a single id.
- To check an existing id, paste it under Read one and read its version, variant and timestamp.
Features
- v4 random UUIDs with 122 random bits
- v7 UUIDs that begin with a millisecond timestamp
- v5 UUIDs derived from a namespace and name with SHA-1, including DNS, URL, OID, X.500 and custom namespaces
- The nil (all zeroes) and max (all ones) UUIDs
- Up to 500 UUIDs per batch
- Five output formats
- A reader that reports version and variant, plus the creation time for v1 and v7
- Plain-text download of the whole batch
Supported formats
Produces UUID strings in the 8-4-4-4-12 form, or one of the four other layouts, and downloads a .txt file with one per line. The reader accepts a UUID pasted as text.
Tips
- For a new database table, v7 is usually the better key than v4, with the caveat that it reveals roughly when each row was created.
- With v5, the same namespace and name give the same UUID every time, so keep the namespace fixed once you have used it.
- v5 runs once per line, so pasting a list of names makes a batch of the same size.
- Pick the compact format when a system rejects hyphens, and urn:uuid: when a spec asks for URN form.
Frequently asked questions
Where does the randomness come from?
From crypto.getRandomValues, the cryptographically secure random source built into your browser, not Math.random.
Are the UUIDs generated on a server?
No. They are created in your browser tab, and the pasted ids you inspect are not sent anywhere either.
What is the difference between v4 and v7?
v4 is almost entirely random. v7 starts with a 48-bit millisecond timestamp followed by random bits, so a list of v7 ids sorts in the order it was created.
Why is a v5 UUID the same every time?
It is a SHA-1 hash of the namespace and the name, so identical input gives an identical result on any machine. That is the point of v5.
What are the nil and max UUIDs for?
The nil UUID is all zeroes and the max UUID is all ones. Both are used as sentinel values meaning "no id" or "the upper bound"; neither identifies anything.
Can I find out when a UUID was created?
For v7 and v1, yes: the Read one panel decodes the timestamp. A v4 contains only random bits, so there is nothing to decode.
Can I try this Pro tool without an account?
Yes. Generate up to 10 UUIDs at a time free. Pro generates batches of 500 and adds downloads. Your own input is processed locally in your browser.
Will upgrading keep my work?
Checkout and login open in a separate tab. Keep the workspace open to retain inputs, settings and previews. Files stay in that tab only; keep the originals in case you close or reload it. Export access is checked with the server after payment.
Your files are processed directly in your browser and are not uploaded to HubToolify's servers.
