Why use this tool?

  • A PDF looks the same on every device, which makes it the safer format to send a CV, a letter or a report.
  • Many application forms and portals accept PDF only.
  • You may not have Word installed or a licence for it, but you still need to produce a PDF from a file someone sent you.
  • A document containing personal details does not need to be sent to an online converter.

How to use Word to PDF

  1. Drop a .docx file onto "Drop a Word file here or click to browse".
  2. Under Page setup choose Paper: Match the document, A4 or US Letter.
  3. Choose Font, either Helvetica or Times, and Body size of 10, 11 or 12 pt.
  4. Read any notice that appears about characters or pictures that could not be carried over.
  5. Look at the preview on the right, then press "Save as PDF".

Features

  • Headings, bold, italic and underline carried across
  • Bulleted and numbered lists, including nested levels
  • Tables with merged columns and borders
  • Pictures placed in the flow, scaled to fit the page
  • Alignment: left, centred and right
  • Choice of paper size, font and body size, with the PDF re-laid out as you change them
  • Counts of pages, paragraphs and words, and the size of the PDF

Supported formats

Accepts .docx files. The older .doc format is detected and rejected with instructions. Saves a PDF named after your document.

Tips

  • The document is re-typeset, not copied, so line breaks and page breaks may land in different places than they do in Word.
  • Your document's own font is not embedded. The text is set in Helvetica or Times, so choose Times for documents written in a serif font.
  • Headers, footers, footnotes, comments and text boxes are not carried over. Move that content into the body first if you need it.
  • Pictures in EMF or WMF format, which Word creates for pasted charts and shapes, cannot be decoded by a browser and are left out.

Frequently asked questions

Is my document uploaded?

No. The .docx is read and the PDF is laid out inside your browser, so neither file is sent to a server.

Will the PDF look exactly like the Word file?

Not exactly. The tool re-sets the text using Helvetica or Times and its own layout rules, so spacing and page breaks can differ even though headings, lists, tables and pictures come across.

Can I convert an old .doc file?

Not directly. Open it in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs, save it as .docx, and drop that file here.

Why are some characters missing or shown as boxes?

The built-in PDF fonts cover Latin text only. Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic and emoji cannot be drawn, and the tool warns you when it finds them.

What happens to headers, footers and footnotes?

They are not included in the PDF. The tool says so, so check the preview before you rely on the result.

Can I pick the paper size?

Yes. Choose A4 or US Letter, or keep the size set in the document.

Can I try this Pro tool without an account?

Yes. Preview the first page of your Word file as a PDF. Pro saves the complete PDF. Your own input is processed locally in your browser.

Will upgrading keep my work?

Checkout and login open in a separate tab. Keep the workspace open to retain inputs, settings and previews. Files stay in that tab only; keep the originals in case you close or reload it. Export access is checked with the server after payment.

Your files are processed directly in your browser and are not uploaded to HubToolify's servers.
