Why use this tool?

  • CSV is the format that databases, import screens and scripts expect, and Excel's own Save As only writes one sheet at a time.
  • A workbook with many tabs can be turned into a zip of CSV files in one step.
  • Opening a CSV directly in Excel can turn 0042 into 42 or mangle accented names; building the workbook here keeps values as text unless they are clearly numbers.
  • Combining several exports into one workbook with named tabs is easier to share than a folder of loose files.

How to use Excel to CSV

  1. Make sure the direction switch says "Excel → CSV", then drop an .xlsx or .xlsm file onto the box.
  2. If the workbook has several sheets, choose one from the Sheet chips. Hidden sheets are marked.
  3. Pick the Delimiter: comma, semicolon, tab or pipe, and leave the byte-order mark ticked if the CSV will be opened in Excel.
  4. Check the preview and press "Save this sheet as CSV", or "Save all as a zip" for every sheet.
  5. To go the other way, switch to "CSV → Excel", drop one or more CSV files or paste CSV, name the file and press "Save as Excel".

Features

  • Reads every sheet, including hidden ones, with the row count shown on each
  • Delimiter choice: comma, semicolon, tab or pipe
  • Optional byte-order mark so Excel shows accented characters correctly
  • Dates are written as YYYY-MM-DD, and formulas as the value they last calculated to
  • Merged cells are exported as the value of the first cell
  • Several CSV files become separate tabs in one .xlsx
  • Preview of the first 12 rows and 12 columns with row, column and cell counts

Supported formats

Reads .xlsx and .xlsm workbooks. Writes .csv files, or a zip of them. In the other direction it reads .csv, .tsv and .txt and writes an .xlsx.

Tips

  • Use the semicolon delimiter for Excel installations in much of Europe, where a comma is the decimal separator.
  • Charts, formatting, colours and macros do not carry over to a CSV, because CSV holds only values.
  • Leave the byte-order mark on for files you will open in Excel, and turn it off if a script or database reading the file objects to it.
  • An older .xls file must be resaved as .xlsx first. The tool tells you so and does not try to read it.

Frequently asked questions

Is my spreadsheet uploaded anywhere?

No. The workbook is unpacked and read in your browser, and the CSV is created there too.

Can it convert every sheet at once?

Yes. When a workbook has more than one sheet, a button saves all of them as separate CSV files in a zip.

Why are my dates in a different format?

Dates are stored as numbers in a workbook. The tool recognises date formats and writes them as YYYY-MM-DD.

Does it work with .xls files?

No. That older binary format is detected and you are asked to save it as .xlsx in Excel, LibreOffice or Google Sheets first.

Will leading zeros survive?

Yes. When building a workbook from CSV, a value like 0042 or +44 20 stays text; only values that are plainly numbers become numbers.

Why do accented letters look wrong in Excel?

Excel reads a CSV in the system code page unless the file begins with a byte-order mark. Tick the option that adds it.

Can I try this Pro tool without an account?

Yes. Read a workbook or paste CSV and see the first 50 rows free. Pro copies and saves every row, and exports CSV, zip and Excel files. Your own input is processed locally in your browser.

Will upgrading keep my work?

Checkout and login open in a separate tab. Keep the workspace open to retain inputs, settings and previews. Files stay in that tab only; keep the originals in case you close or reload it. Export access is checked with the server after payment.

Your files are processed directly in your browser and are not uploaded to HubToolify's servers.
