Free Image Compressor

Reduce image file size and inspect the quality before saving. Drop in up to 20 photos, choose a quality level or a target size such as 200 KB, and download the results as a batch.

Why use this tool?

  • Large images are the most common reason a page loads slowly, and page speed is something search engines measure.
  • Email and upload forms often cap attachments at 2 MB or 5 MB; compressing to a target size gets a photo under the limit on the first try.
  • The compression runs on your own machine, so nothing waits on an upload and nothing is queued behind other people's files.

How to use Image Compressor

  1. Drag your images onto the drop zone, or click it to pick files. Up to 20 at a time.
  2. Choose how to compress: by quality, or by naming a target size such as 200 KB.
  3. Check the before-and-after size shown against each image.
  4. Download them one by one, or all at once as a zip.

Features

  • Batch of up to 20 images in one pass
  • Every image comes back in the format it went in as, unless you ask otherwise
  • Compress by quality, or down to an exact file size
  • Original and compressed sizes shown side by side
  • Convert the whole batch to WebP, JPEG or PNG when you do want a change

Supported formats

Accepts JPG and JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and GIF. Saves back to the same format by default — a PNG downloads as a PNG, a JPEG as a JPEG, a WebP as a WebP — or converts the batch to JPEG, WebP or PNG if you pick one. GIF and AVIF are the exceptions: browsers can read them but cannot write them, so those are saved as PNG.

Tips

  • For photographs, quality around 75-80 is usually indistinguishable from the original at a fraction of the size.
  • For screenshots, flat graphics and anything with sharp text, PNG or WebP holds up better than JPEG.
  • If a form rejects your file, set an exact target a little under the limit rather than guessing at a quality level.

Frequently asked questions

Will my PNG download as a PNG?

Yes. Each image is saved as the format it arrived in, so a PNG stays a PNG, a JPEG stays a JPEG and a WebP stays a WebP. Choose a format from the Output format row only if you actually want to convert.

Why does a PNG come back the same size?

PNG is lossless, so a quality setting has nothing to work on — the pixels are stored exactly either way. To make a PNG smaller, reduce its dimensions, or convert it to WebP, which is typically a fraction of the size.

Can I compress a GIF and get a GIF back?

No, and no browser-based tool can: a canvas cannot write GIF, and it only ever sees the first frame of an animated one. GIFs are saved as PNG here instead. For an animated GIF, converting the source video with Video to GIF gives a far better result than re-compressing the GIF.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The compression runs in your browser using the Canvas API, so the image data never leaves your device.

Does compressing an image reduce its quality?

JPEG and WebP compression is lossy, so some detail is discarded. At quality 75-80 the difference is very hard to see, and the file is typically 60-80% smaller.

How many images can I compress at once?

Twenty per batch. There is no daily limit on how many batches you run.

Can I compress to an exact file size?

Yes. Enter a target such as 200 KB and the tool searches for the quality setting that lands closest to it without going over.

Your files are processed directly in your browser and are not uploaded to HubToolify's servers.
