Social Media Character Counter Pro
Counts the way each platform actually counts — links flattened to 23 characters on X, non-Latin characters doubled, emoji counted as one — and marks the fold, which matters more than the limit. Why use this tool?
- A link is 23 characters on X however long it is, because everything is rewritten to t.co. A counter that does not know this tells you a postable tweet is 100 over.
- An emoji is one character to a reader and two to four to String.length. Most counters use String.length and overstate an emoji-heavy post badly.
- Non-Latin characters cost two on X, so a post in Hindi, Japanese, Arabic or Russian gets half the room.
- The limit decides whether you can post. The fold — 125 characters on Instagram, about 210 on LinkedIn — decides whether anyone reads it.
How to use Social Media Character Counter
- Paste or write the post.
- Filter to one platform, or leave it on All.
- Check the fold preview: that is the part people see before tapping "more".
- Copy the post, or the list of numbers for a content calendar.
Features
- 26 limits across X, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Threads, Bluesky, Pinterest, Reddit, Mastodon, Discord, Telegram, WhatsApp, SMS and Google
- X's weighted counting with t.co link flattening
- Grapheme-accurate counting, so a family emoji counts as one
- The truncation point marked and previewed for each platform
- Hashtag, mention, emoji, word and line counts
Tips
- Write the first 125 characters as if they were the whole post. On most feeds they are.
- Hashtags at the end of a caption rather than inside it keeps the opening readable, and the fold preview shows you why.
Frequently asked questions
How many characters is a tweet?
280, but counted X's own way: every link counts as 23 regardless of length, and characters outside the Latin range count as two. The tool shows the weighted figure alongside the plain character count.
How long should an Instagram caption be?
The limit is 2,200 characters, but only about the first 125 appear before "more". Whatever has to be read needs to be in those.
Why does my count differ from another tool?
Most counters use String.length, which counts an emoji as two to four and ignores X's link and weighting rules. This counts visible characters and applies each platform's own rules.
Can I try this Pro tool without an account?
